Why a Website Isn’t Enough For Your Home Based Business
Did your home based business opportunity come with its very own pre-made website? Did your sponsor assure you that, because you had this fully pre-built website, getting business would be a breeze? I’m sorry to tell you that you’ve been a little bit misled. A website can be an extremely useful tool, don’t get me wrong, but it’s just not enough. A website alone is a little bit like a brochure. You don’t believe that the simple act of having a brochure out there is going to bring you loads of business, do you? Of course not!
In point of fact, a physical brochure would probably bring you more business than a website, because your brochure, at least, is not going to get drowned. A website, however, is competing with, literally, trillions of other websites. You have to figure out how people are going to find you, even before you figure out if they’re going to stay and find anything.
If your site is pre-generated by your company, it’s not unique, which means right away you have a problem. Google penalizes duplicate sites, so you’ve got one strike against you. But even if your site is 100% unique and keyword optimized till you are blue in the face, you still have a lot of work ahead of you. You have to find ways to drive traffic to your site. You also have to update your site on a regular basis, because if your site doesn’t update, people have no reason to visit it. Google also prefers sites that update on a regular basis.
Placing strategic free content on the web and using social media can help you drive traffic to your site. It can also help you build relationships, which is what transforms your site from a mere brochure to a portal where your customers and potential customers can get what they want. More than that, engaging in content marketing and social media marketing efforts can help give your website the piece it was missing-the ability to forge relationships. In addition, you should look into a landing page or a squeeze page, where people will sign up to your Internet list. If you direct people to your site, and that site serves mainly as a storefront, then you at least do not have to worry about getting lost in the Great Google Sea. You’ll be helping the right people find you and your opportunity, even if you use the company provided website.
If you do use the website you should at least add a blog. Some company provided websites offer blog capability right on the site, recognizing the need for unique content. This is wonderful news, because it means that you can keep your “store site” and your “blog and content site” exactly the same. If you’re starting from scratch you should marry the two sites together; any competent website builder will be able to give you that capability. This allows you to offer a steady stream of new, fresh content on a regular basis that updates your site and makes it more than a place for customers to spend money. Customers will appreciate that! Ironically, having something to do on your site other than spend money usually means that people will spend money. It’s a little like reading a magazine about tasty candy while standing in the candy store-eventually it will be hard not to buy some! Do you get the same results from a candy brochure? Well, probably not. Just ask thousands of kids who will be trying that route for their school fundraisers sometime this fall.
